A beautiful saree can be let down by a blouse that does not fit. The good news is that you can take accurate saree blouse measurements at home with just a measuring tape and a little help from a friend. Here is how.
Before you start
- Wear a well-fitting bra, the one you will wear with the saree.
- Use a soft tailor’s tape, and keep it snug but not tight.
- Measure in inches and write each number down straight away.
The key measurements
- Bust: around the fullest part of your chest, keeping the tape level at the back.
- Waist (under bust): around your ribcage, just below the bust, where the blouse will end.
- Shoulder: from the edge of one shoulder to the other, across the back.
- Armhole: around the top of your arm, through the armpit.
- Sleeve length: from the shoulder edge down to where you want the sleeve to end.
- Sleeve round: around your arm at the point where the sleeve will end.
- Blouse length: from the highest point of the shoulder down to where the blouse should end.
- Front and back neck depth: from the shoulder point straight down to where you want the neckline.
Choosing the style
Sleeves: elbow length is the most versatile; short sleeves feel modern; three-quarter and full sleeves are elegant for winter weddings. Opening: front hooks are easiest to wear on your own. Padding: optional, and gives structure to lighter fabrics.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Pulling the tape too tight, which makes the blouse uncomfortable.
- Measuring over a thick top or sweater.
- Guessing the neck depth. If unsure, choose a moderate depth; it is easier to adjust later.
